Congratulations on making it this far! By now your hard work is starting to really pay off. You should be able to hold reasonably sophisticated conversations about most everyday things and while you still can't discuss the socio-political situation in Iraq or the finer points of the global economy, you're certainly getting there! From this point on, you will have much more leeway in your studies. By now you are intimately acquainted with what works best for you. If you've chosen the Pimsleur route, now is the time to finish it off with Pimsleur III. If you've chosen FSI, you now have a decision to make. Since Barron only publishes volumes I and 2 of the 4-part series, you can either switch to the Platiquemos series (starting with level 5) mentioned before, go over to Audioforum.com to purchase volumes 3 and 4 (it's much more expensive here), or abandon FSI entirely in favor of independent study (and saving money). Regardless of the path you choose, you should start reading some serious Spanish material. I personally read El Seņor de los Anillos series: La Communidad del Anillo, Las Dos Torres, and Retorno del Rey. You could also throw in El Hobbit just for fun (this one is a bit easier to read so you might actually want to start with it). The translations are excellent and of course, everybody loves LotR But pretty much any "adult" novel in Spanish will do. If you're really up for a challenge, try reading Don Quixote de La Mancha por Miguel de Cervantes ($10) in the original, and trust me when I say it's not easy. Of course, all this time you should continue watching Spanish television and listening to Hispanic radio. At this point, there's really not much I can do to help you. Continue reading, practicing with anybody who will listen (Mexican restaurants are excellent places to practice), and most importantly of all, travel and study in a Spanish-speaking country! By this stage, it should only take a few weeks of being immersed in the culture and language for you to become completely fluent, if you aren't already. You've definitely earned a vacation for all your hard work. Please feel free to Email Me me with any suggestions, corrections, comments, success stories, learning techniques that have worked for you, etc. I'm always looking for ways to improve this site and better serve the community.
