How To Say “Goodbye” In Spanish Without Sounding Like A Tourist
It’s true, adiós is the word for “goodbye” in Spanish, but that doesn’t mean you have to use it all the time. After all, do you always say “goodbye” in English when parting ways? Of course not. You might instead say “see ya” or “later” or “until next time” or any other hundreds of variations on the same theme. Using a wide variety of expressions for common greetings/salutations is a way of expressing yourself. Nothing will peg you more surely as a foreigner than mechanically repeating the word adiós over and over. Here are some alternatives.
Nos vemos – See ya
Hasta luego – later dawg (or just “see you later”)
Chao - goodbye (from Italian)
Hasta la vista - until we meet again
Hasta mañana – until tomorrow
Nos divertimos mucho – It’s been fun!
Que te vaya bien – take it easy
Memorize this list and try to respond with something different from the other person. If your friend says “nos vemos,” try “chao” or “hasta mañana” instead.
