Build Your Spanish Vocabulary

Modern Spanish: Bilingual Vocabulary Cards:  Repeat after me:  I need flash cards, I need flash cards.  This particular set contains 1000 cards and even comes with a 75 page booklet listing the cards in groups with both the Spanish and English.  Flash cards are flash cards so if you find some cheaper than these, go ahead and buy them.  But everybody in the beginner-intermediate range needs a set.  The best way to use them is to put 10-20 cards in your pocket before you leave in the morning, then refer to them every time you have a spare second throughout the day.  Waiting for the elevator?  Drill a card!  Waiting in line for lunch?  Drill three!  In this way, you'll be able amass a sizeable vocabulary in the course of your normal day and won't have to set aside any time at night to do so.

1001 Most Useful Spanish Words:  I absolutely cannot believe the price on this little book: it's easily be worth 4 times as much.  As beginners vocabulary lists go, this is it.  It contains 1001 of the most common Spanish words in alphabetical order with each word having its own example sentence to provide some context.  In the end is a short (< 1 page) grammar section and a 3 page overview of Spanish food vocabulary (you'll be glad you went over this when you get to the restaurant).  It's only $2 so I really can't think of a reason not to buy this book.

Easy Spanish Phrase Book: Over 770 Basic Phrases for Everyday Use:  The title pretty much sums it up.  This book is just a list of useful phrases to know.  It would be ideal for a tourist and again, at $1.50, there's really no good reason to pass it up.  Put it in your bathroom and flip through it instead of the Reader's Digest.

Vocabulearn Spanish/Ingles:  Vocabulearn is basically a vocabulary list on CD and I've heard a lot of good things about it.  The way I see it, it has one huge advantage and one huge disadvantage over flashcards.  The advantage is that it allows you to hear the proper pronunciation of the word, which is extremely important.  The disadvantage is that you can't really use it in spare moments on the elevator etc.  Of course, it also costs 3 times as much.  If you're balking at the price, I would personally recommend to skip Vocabulearn and just go with the flash cards.  If you're a very oral learner this package will work great.  It also comes with a book that mirrors the audio.

Mastering Spanish Vocabulary:  A Thematic Approach:  This is a good, well-organized book with thousands of words, all with example sentences.  There are 41 different categories covering almost anything you could ever think to talk about.  Each section is also divided into Standard and Advanced categories which I didn't see the point of.  The "Advanced" section didn't seem much harder than the Standard to me.  The price is right for the amount of information included, but you still can't carry it in your pocket like you can flash cards.  On the other hand, you don't get example sentences on flash cards either.  This is a book that will definitely require some will-power if you expect to get much out of it but if you can force yourself to sit down and learn a new list every night you will undoubtedly notice a huge difference within a month.

Mastering Spanish Business Vocabulary:  A Thematic Approach:  Same as above except it focuses more on business vocabulary.  It would be most useful if you already know some Spanish and want to sound more professional for work situations or have a need for some industry-specific lingo you won't find in most dictionaries.

Schaum's Outline of Spanish Vocabulary:  Schaum must know everything about everything because he has an outline for any subject you could think of.  Quality of this one is on par with the other outlines so if you've every used a Schaum's, you know what to expect.  Of average quality but you will certainly learn some new words without breaking the bank.
